Entrevista Traduzida

Barry Burton aparece no quinto filme, você viu?

Original Interview in English

Hello Greg! First of all, thank you so much for accepting to give us this interview! Were you aware that fans have been looking for you for 21 years, since Biohazard/Resident Evil was launched? If so, how come you never appeared publicly to talk about this amazing work?

I had no idea that the fans of Resident Evil were looking for me. I only realized that there were people trying to track me down after I received and email from Frederic.
I have never been given the opportunity to speak about Resident Evil until this interview.

We know it has been a while, but can you tell us a little bit about the shootings of Biohazard videos? First, how did you get involved in it?

It was a long time ago when I was living in Japan. The shooting took two days. One day in a studio for the helicopter scenes and all night shoot by a river in an area about 20km outside of Tokyo.
There was also one or two days being made into Barry, getting fitted out for the clothes, rehearsing and hair cuts etc.
I was found by one of the producers while walking down the street in Rappongi in Tokyo. I was living in Tokyo teaching at the time on a one year exchange from Australia.

We know the videos have been recorded in Japan. How did the shootings occurr? When and where? Is there any fun fact you can tell us about it?

Yes that’s right it was all done in Japan, the actors were from the USA and Australia.
The shootings were all planned and rehearsed and directed so as they matched up with the game.
The shooting took place in August / September 1995.
Not to many fun facts, it was great fun shooting the action parts of running through the long grass shooting guns etc at the wild dogs.
The dogs were Doberman and they were super friendly in real life. They spent most of the time sitting on our laps being patted. They were lovely animals.
Barry only got to fire his gun two or three times as the firing mechanism broke and it wouldn’t work. I was really disappointed that my gun stopped working.

Were you aware that you were involved in a videogame project? What were the expectations for its launch back then?

Yes we were aware at the time that we were going to be part of a video game but we really didn’t have anything to do with it once filming was finished.
After they paid me I never heard from them again.
The launch happened without any interaction from me as Barry.

Have you ever been recognized by any Biohazard fans when walking on the streets or something like that?

Yes I was recognized a number of times in the early days in 1996 / 1997 by teenagers in my local town.
They came up to me and said “You look just like the guy in the video game Resident Evil!”
That was the first time that I had heard the name Resident Evil. During the filming they didn’t tell us the name of the game.

In the credits of the game, the names of the actors are only their first names, like Charlie, Inezh and yours (Gregory). Do you know if these names are all real names after all?

I know that Charlie’s name was correct and mine was right but not too sure about the other actors.
Charlie was a really handsome guy and I think that he got lots of acting work Tokyo.
I got to act in a number of other shows in TV in Japan but RE was the biggest and best.

How was the contact and interaction with the other actors while shooting? Did you become friends with them? Do you still have any kind of contact after all this time?

The other actors were friendly during the shooting. There was lots of down time between each scene so we talked and joked about etc. I was the oldest by far so I was like the old guy of the group.
I have only just made contact with Charlie a few days ago. We also became Facebook friends. I have had no contact with the girls.

Have you been able to check your performance after the game was released? The Remake of the original Resident Evil was launched in 2002 but they decided to do a CGI video for the opening, did you check it as well?

I did see the game after it was released it was fun at the time, but seems really very basic now.

Question from Vanderlei Antedomenico – Do you know if Barry’s final visual in-game was then based on you, or was it pre-ready and they looked for people who matched that appearance for the live-action scenes?

The Barry drawings were completed and they found me in the street as I matched the drawings. I was made to be Barry. I say that I was the first and the best.

Question from Eduardo Wrzecyonek – Have you worked more on videogames after Biohazard?

No I didn’t perform in any other games, at the end of 1995 I returned to Australia to continue my career as a teacher and school principal.

Question from João Paulo Moura – Have you seen the live-action movies starring Milla Jovovich? What do you think of them? Barry Burton shows up in the fifth movie, did you see it?

I haven’t seen all the movies but I did see the 5th movie and I think that I would have been a better Barry!

Question from Alessandro Conti – Can you tell us if the picture (on the left) is your real family, taken from your personal archives to compose a file found with the character?

No it isn’t my family, it was a made up photo. In real life I have 3 daughters.

Question from Alessandro Conti – Some people believe that Sergio Alarcon has voiced Wesker, others think that he was only a voice actor, would you by any chance know anything about that?

No I have no idea. I do know that my character Barry was voiced over with an American accent. The producer didn’t like my Aussie accent.

Big thanks to Dr. Raichi who got to find Gregory on the internet!
