Segue, sim!

Original Interview in English

How and when did the original concept for this Resident Evil 2 board game come to light?
Steamforged Games: The original concept for the core mechanics actually came to light during a long road trip that Mat (Hart, Creative Director and co-founder of Steamforged Games) and I took last year. The trip was to a lovely cottage up in the hills where we spent a solid week with the development team, thrashing out the core game experience. During that trip, after recently playing a bunch of the other ‘zombie’ games out there, we chatted extensively about not quite getting that ‘high stress/pressure’ feeling that we got from playing Resident Evil. We really wanted to capture that building tension feeling so vital to a survival horror game, one where every bullet counts and poor decisions can come back to haunt you so we drilled down into these themes to see how we could replicate that feeling in a board game. Fortunately, the trip was long and gave us plenty of time to bounce some ideas around!

How were the negotiations with Capcom to use their game?
Luckily, Mat used to work for Capcom (back when he was making video games for a living) so the negotiations were super friendly and very easy. Both Steamforged Games and Capcom couldn’t be more excited to be working together so closely in order to bring Resident Evil 2™ – The Board Game to fans of the series. We have several Resident Evil super fans on our design team (of which I am one!), and it’s been very constructive to be able to liaise with Capcom directly to help really bring this iconic release to life. We’re very respectful of the intellectual property of the Resident Evil universe and the characters from the game, and Capcom appreciate our dedication!

Why did you choose Resident Evil 2 to be the base for the game?
Resident Evil 2 is regarded by many to be one of the most popular games in the Resident Evil series, even so long after its original release in 1998. Between veteran gamers from back in the day to the new players only just discovering the game now, it’s a real fan-favourite. We knew when we first started thinking about which game we wanted to make from the series that this genre defining classic had to be the one we started with.

Regarding the two scenarios of Resident Evil, A and B, how do you plan to somehow adapt it to the board game? (Question from patron Ana Cruz)
Resident Evil 2™ – The Board Game features a series of scenarios which tell the story of Resident Evil 2 and step the player through the events and the locations each character encountered. These can be played either as standalone games, or as part of a campaign mode which will allow players to play narratively through the game in the A-Walkthrough in a series of linked scenarios. A dedicated expansion, entitled ‘The B-Files’ will allow players to experience the B-Walkthrough of the original game, and the unique enemies encountered in this scenario.

What are the main features that will make this board game different from the others? (Question from patron Samuel Sobrinho)
When we started designing Resident Evil 2™ – The Board Game, we knew that our first objective was to make it feel just like playing the original Resident Evil 2. Our focus was recreating that sense of survival horror and the tension which players felt throughout the game. We made each enemy an encounter which players have to think carefully about how to approach, instead of being able to just blast away every time – attacking makes noise which attracts enemies and forces players to count bullets. We also wanted to retain the fast pace of the video game, so we removed the enemy turn completely, forcing players to have to deal with enemies as they move around. Finally, we introduced unique tension deck and encounter tables systems, which keeps players guessing as to what they’re going to be facing each time and keeps the suspense throughout.

Does this board game follow the same game plot? (Question from patron Felipe Lopes)
It does indeed! We’re huge fans of the original video game, and we wanted to remain as faithful as possible. That includes the story arc and plot, as well as all of the characters, enemies, weapons and locations. Veteran players will be pleased to see familiar map layouts and item locations, as well as events and jump scares specific to each location. We even added an option for tank controls, for the really hardcore players!

How do you plan to approach the fans of the game that are not fans of board game, to convince them to give it a try? (Question from patron Julian Camargo)
We’ve already seen a lot of interest in the game from fans via social media after announcing it, and we’ve had a lot of messages from people who remember the game and can’t wait for the Kickstarter. We’ll be running demonstrations at events and conventions we attend throughout and after the campaign, and promoting it via various different websites and YouTube channels geared towards video gaming, as well as tabletop gaming. We’re blessed on this project to have such a dedicated and enthusiastic fanbase as an audience, and many of those people are enthusiastic enough to try Resident Evil 2™ – The Board Game even if they don’t have a history of playing tabletop games.

If the Kickstarter becomes a hit, do you plan to release other board games based of Resident Evil, from other episodes, RE3 for example?
We’re immensely proud of the game we’ve developed for this Kickstarter, we can’t wait to share it with all the RE fans out there. As fans of the series ourselves, we’d dearly love to work on other episodes and so have everything crossed that this Kickstarter is a hit and we can carry on making games we love to play!
